LONGTERM MARKET SUCCESS

LESSONS FOR MY SON

My son is at that age where he hasn’t quite figured out what he wants to be yet, but has definitely decided that he wants to earn a good income. Sometimes, it’s difficult for me to teach him things directly, as I did when he was younger, because, to a teenager, I’m now considered “old”—a fact he often reminds me of with a good-humored smirk. Due to his recent interest in the markets, partly for sport but mostly as a potential beacon when things get tough, I’ve decided to document my steps. This record serves as a repository of information in case he eventually decides he wants to get involved in trading or if either of us gets lost along the way.

It has been said that big money is often made by taking big swings. However, successful trading in today’s market relies on a robust combination of time, patience, experience, and wisdom. There is the time needed to execute the many thousands of digital transactions fueling the daily drama of the markets—accepting the losses necessary to develop an odds-based sense of reasoning that sufficiently protects one’s capital. Then, there is the patience to sit on a trade or even sit out a day if it doesn’t fit the playbook; this patience helps forge the temperament needed to skillfully navigate large positions when they arise. The experience gained through trial and error with all the market’s many nuances ultimately helping to obtain that elusive “edge” we all strive for. Finally, there is the wisdom to accept that anything can happen and to embrace trading’s one conclusive tenet: only a fool believes he can predict an outcome with certainty. Through this potential parallel journey of ours, I hope to instill in my son enough confidence to earn and manage his own capital wisely, enabling him to take “big swings” at whatever future opportunities life presents. This breadcrumb record of my trading journey, although written as a reminder to myself, is ultimately for him.
